Instruments and more instruments!

Let's start with a wonderful video of our Pre-K 4-year-old class singing the Moroccan folk song, A Ram Sam Sam.


The lyrics are:

Great job, Pre-K 4-year-olds! I will be using this video to teach this song to the Pre-K 3-year-old class.

The Grade 1/2 class has been diligently working on bell sets. Sometimes these are called xylophones, but we try to refer to them as "bells" or "8-note-bells" because xylophones are actually a bit different. Many students have said that they have toy bell-sets at home similar to the sets we use in class, so I scanned the book we are using so they can practice at home:

The Grade 1/2 class also enjoyed a little dancing after their hard work on the bells.


The Grade KG/1class worked with tambourines this week, after recording this song. It is a wonderful song that they learned last year in art class:

The Pre-K 3-year-old class is working on appropriate movements for different types of music. Slow music dictates slower movement and fast music means faster movement. We also learned a few fun steps to help our slow/fast movement along, including galloping.


Grade 3/4 is working on recorders, starting a new program called "Recorder Karate." Students are learning the importance of independent, SLOW practice. When a student masters a song or set of songs, they can play them for me and earn a belt (to tie to their recorder). All students have passed their white belt and many are working on yellow. A few students will reach red by the end of today.

We will hopefully have a video up next week of the entire class playing the White Belt song, Hot Cross Buns.

Middle schools students started ukulele this week. We are working toward using the instruments to accompany one of the younger classes on the Winter Concert.




In library, we read some great books this week! Unfortunately, none of them have good read-aloud videos. The books will, however, be available for check-out beginning Monday.

In Pre-K 3-year-old and 4-year-old classes, we read Cock-a-doodle-doo! Baryard Hullabaloo by Giles Andreae and David Wojtowycz.





Pre-K 4-year-olds are also working on check-out and book sharing procedures. During check-out they stand in a straight line and wait their turn. During book-share, they find a place to sit after check-out and look through their new books with their friends.




In Grades KG-2, we read What Goes Around, Comes Around by Richard McGuire. This is a wonderful book with a literal representation of the concept that what you give, positive or negative, will come back to you one way or another.


Grades 3/4 listened to a short story about what it was like for a child to take over all of her mother's chores for the day. The story was called Carry On, Carolina and it was from an e-book of short stories for kids called Short Stories for Kids: Fun Stories for Children by Karen Cossey. Ms. Megan forgot her Kindle so we had to read it off the iPhone!


Next week, we will start holiday music and continue working on instruments. In library, we will read one of my favorite stories about a little girl who gets mistreated because of her name.
